The wife of Uriah, and probably granddaughter of Atithophel which see. David first committed adultery with her, then caused her husband to be slain, and afterwards took her to wife. These sins displeased Jehovah, who sent the prophet Nathan to David, with the parable of the ewe lamb, 2Sa 12:1. David bitterly repented, but was yet punished, 2Sa 11:12. Bath-sheba was the mother of Solomon, whose succession to the throne she took pains to secure, 1Ki 1:15. She is afterwards mentioned in the history of Adonijah, 1Ki 2:13, in the title of Ps 51:1, and among the ancestors of Christ, Mt 1:6.

And David said to Uriah, Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

daughter of the oath, or of seven, called also Bath-shu'a (1Chr 3:5|), was the daughter of Eliam (2Sa 11:3) or Ammiel (1Ch 3:5), and wife of Uriah the Hittite. David committed adultery with her (2Sa 11:4-5; Ps 51:1). The child born in adultery died (2Sa 12:15-19). After her husband was slain (2Sa 11:15) she was married to David (2Sa 11:27), and became the mother of Solomon (2Sa 12:24; 1Ki 1:11; 2:13). She took a prominent part in securing the succession of Solomon to the throne (1Ki 1:11,16-21).

David sent and inquired about the woman. One said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers and took her. And she came in to him, and he lay with her -- "for she was purified from her uncleanness. Then she returned to her house. read more. But when David saw that his servants whispered, he perceived that the child was dead. So he said to them, Is the child dead? And they said, He is.
David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went to her and lay with her; and she bore a son, and she called his name Solomon. And the Lord loved [the child];
Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, reigns and David our lord does not know it?
Bathsheba bowed and did obeisance to the king. The king said, What do you wish? And she said to him, My lord, you swore by the Lord your God to your handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me and sit upon my throne. read more. And now, behold, Adonijah is reigning, and, my lord the king, you do not know it. He has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army. But he did not invite Solomon your servant. Now, my lord O king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after you. Otherwise, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, I and my son Solomon shall be counted as offenders.
